acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healthcare procedures in the world. It is based on the ancient Chinese knowledge of maintaining the flow of energy channels (meridians) running throughout the body. Traditional Chinese medicine follows the principle of Taoism, the delicate balance within the body of two opposing and inseparable forces: yin and yang.

Acupuncture: What is it?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healthcare procedures in the world. It is based on the ancient Chinese knowledge of maintaining the flow of energy channels (meridians) running throughout the body. Traditional Chinese medicine follows the principle of Taoism, the delicate balance within the body of two opposing and inseparable forces: yin and yang.

What we do at our office? Traditional vs. Medical/Anatomic Acupuncture

Medical or anatomic acupuncture refers to the modern scientific approach taken by western-trained physicians to combine the knowledge of traditional acupuncture with western-learned anatomy and physiology. Acupuncture needles are carefully inserted into the injured location to stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemicals regulate the nervous system to aid in decreasing pain and stimulating the body's natural healing abilities.

What kind of needles will be used? Will they hurt?

Acunpuncture needles are disposable. They are used only once so they will always be sterile. Although different people have varying experiences with needling, most people will only feel a slight prick as the needle is inserted or removed. The point on the needle is smooth, not hollow like a hypodermic needle, so the insertion through the skin is much less painful than an injection or giving blood.

How many treatments will be needed?

The number of treatments differs from person to person. The chronicity of the injury is one of the biggest factors in determining treatment plans; usually fewer visits are required for acute injuries.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. The only side effects that may be expected are temporary aggravation of symptoms, or slight bruising at the sight of needle insertion. If you are pregnant, acupuncture is not advisable.

What should I do or not do the day of a treatment?

Do not consume any alcohol, barbiturates, or sedatives four hours prior to a treatment. Continue with any medications as directed by your physician. Do not eat an unusually large meal immediately before or after a treatment. After a treatment, when you get home try to rest for at least two hours.
