The term 'orthotic' can be extremely confusing. Basically there are two main categories of orthotics:

Non-prescription 'arch supports'.
Custom made prescription medical devices.

We take great pride in offering custom molded prescription orthotics to our patients. These precision medical devices are made of high-impact materials and are designed to fit into both an existing or a new shoe.

A wide variety of people benefit greatly from the use of orthotics. Foot structure variances and walking/work surfaces will usually be the two most important factors in determining the need for orthotics. If you have any of the following complaints, you may be a candidate for orthotics:

Knee pain
Shin splints
Plantar fasciitis
Ankle pain
Bunions
Calluses
Foot pain
Chronic ankle sprains
Excessive pronation/supination

Each time your foot contacts the ground, it should follow a complex pattern of movements. If there is a structural problem or the foot becomes fatigued, the distribution of weight may be altered and a multitude of problems can occur. With the orthotic, the foot is guided through the correct and consistent position. The orthotic biomechanically corrects the relationship between the bony joints of the foot and the surrounding musculature, therefore relieving pain, pressure, and the progression of deformities.

In order to determine if you are a proper candidate for orthotics, an in-office evaluation will need to be performed. An evaluation consists of weight bearing and non-weight bearing static examinations, a gait analysis, an inspection of shoe wear patterns, and various orthopedic tests.

If an orthotic is deemed necessary, a custom impression of the foot is taken. This cast is what the orthotic is molded from, and where proper corrections are made. Turn-around time between the evaluation and when the orthotics are shipped back from the lab is approximately 2 weeks.
