chiropractic

A Chiropractor is a primary health care professional that specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and injury. Like medical doctors, chiropractors first complete the traditional "pre-med" education followed by an additional four years of training in the biological and clinical sciences. Chiropractors are recognized as expert providers of spinal and peripheral joint manipulation and mobilization. Chiropractors may also utilize a variety of supportive and complimentary modalities such as electro-therapy, ultrasound, microcurrent, ice and stretching and strengthening exercises. The range of diagnostic and therapeutic services offered by a Chiropractor is dynamic and is continually modified by education, research, technological change and the patient's evolving health care needs.

What conditions do Chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors treat a variety of common musculoskeletal conditions, including; back and neck pain, TMJ, rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome , sprains/strains, sciatica, muscle tension headaches, shin splints, iliotibial band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, and much, much more.

The Chiropractic profession has changed dramatically over the last fifteen years. It now leads the major movement in health care focusing on lower costs and less invasive modes of treatment. Surveys show that chiropractors enjoy the highest rates of patient satisfaction among healthcare professionals.

What is an adjustment?

The Chiropractic adjustment is an extremely effective mode of treatment. An adjustment is performed when the doctor uses his/her hands to impart a precise, short, quick thrust to areas of restricted motion in the spine or extremities. The adjustment releases deep scar tissue and adhesions and relaxes the surrounding muscles. By restoring normal motion and biomechanics, the adjustment reduces pain and spasm, increases range of motion, and improves coordination and performance.

We combine the Chiropractic adjustment with other therapeutic modalities such as ART and individualized stretching and strengthening programs to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients.

What is the cracking sound?

The popping or clicking sound that often occurs during an adjustment is perfectly normal. It is similar to pulling a suction cup from a flat surface. The sound is made when a vacuum force created by the adjustment pulls dissolved gas molecules out of the synovial fluid inside the joint being treated. The sound is not necessary for an effective adjustment to occur and there are many styles of adjusting that make no noise at all.

Are adjustments safe?

Although every form of treatment has risks, Chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe when delivered by a competent practitioner. Current research demonstrates you are approximately 400 times more likely to experience serious injury from taking over- the- counter pain relievers like ibuprofen than from a cervical (neck) adjustment.

What about X-rays?

Most Chiropractic patients DO NOT need x-rays. Sometimes x-rays need to be taken to rule out more serious medical conditions or when more information is needed to make an accurate diagnosis. If x-rays are determined to be clinically necessary, our patients are referred to the hospital out-patient x-ray department so they can have access to the most modern equipment and technology available.

Do I have to keep coming back forever?

No. The modern approach to chiropractic care is focused on rehabilitation. The goal of treatment is to restore and improve function while educating patients on how to take care of themselves. All of our patients are given custom exercise programs on discharge so they can maintain their function independently.
